Bertha M. (Daniels) Mulkey

July 13, 1920 ~ August 31, 2024 (age 104) 104 Years Old

Bertha Mulkey Obituary

Ms. Bertha M. Mulkey is a native of Barbour County (Baker Hill),         Alabama. Her parents are Rev. and Mrs. Howard E. and Mrs. Sallie Diggs Daniels (both are deceased). She was born on July 13, 1920 and is the oldest of nine siblings. Mrs. Bertha Mulkey departed this earthly life on August 31, 2024 at Crowne Health Care of Eufaula.

     Ms. Mulkey attended elementary school at Saint Luke Baptist Church in Baker Hill, Alabama and the Baptist Academic School in Eufaula, Alabama. She relocated to Clayton, Alabama in 1938 and attended Rosenwald Elementary School and completed high school at the Barbour County Training School.

     After attending Alabama A&M College in Huntsville, Alabama from which she graduated as a Home Economics Teacher, Ms. Mulkey returned home to teach in a number of schools across Barbour County, including; Saint Mark; Clayton Rosenwald; Saint Luke and Bethel in Louisville, Alabama; Summer Program classes in Clio, Alabama; Center Ridge High School in Mt. Andrew, Alabama; and Freemount Junior School in Baker Hill, Alabama.

     In addition to her long and dedicated teaching career, Ms. Mulkey has sown seeds of kindness and grace over the span of a lifetime to enrich the lives of her community through her membership in various organizations, including: the Barbour County Improvement Association (BCIA); the South East Alabama Self-Help Association (SEASHA); the Tuskegee Institute Community Education Program (TICEP); the Senior Citizen Center Program in Eufaula, Alabama; and the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRDC) Program in Clayton, Alabama.

     Perhaps the most distinguished recognition she received was the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to her by the Clayton High School Class of 1982 for her uncompromising commitment to serving others.

     Ms. Mulkey has been a longtime member of the Elam Baptist Church that was renamed the Elam Baptist Christian Fellowship Church under the pastorate of Elder E. C. Holt. Her current Pastor is Rev. Donald Boone. She continued her ministry there as a faithful worker in the mission’s outreach until her health began to fail.

     As for hobbies/pastime activities, Ms. Mulkey enjoyed traveling with family. She also enjoyed quilting and maintaining her garden up until her health began to fail.

     Ms. Mulkey leaves to cherish her memory: four sisters, Mrs. Sallie Belinda Horton of Detroit, MI, Mrs. Predie C. Greene of Arlington, VA, Mrs. Larla C. Hooks of Northport, AL and Mrs. Willie M. English of Detroit, MI; one brother, Mr. David Daniels (Mamie) of Tuscaloosa, AL; Mrs. Ollie Daniels; A host of loving nephews and nieces: Harold Horton (Lawanda R), Cheryl B. Horton, Alvin L. Thomas, Edward D. Greene, Denise M. Mason (Reginald), Maurice A. Greene (Sandra), Carl E. Greene, Ronald A. Greene, Rodney M. Young, Larcenia Lott (Kenny), Daryus English (Tammy), Zenas English, Holly English (LaTonia), Sencenell Daniels, Ronald L. Proctor, Gail Proctor, Pamela Hicks (James), Robie Proctor-Jenning (Delbert), Valerie Proctor, Tommy C. Daniels, Jr. (Carolyn), and a host of great nieces and great nephews, cousins,  other relatives and special friends.

     Ms. Mulkey was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jessie  Mulkey; two brothers, John Walter Daniels and Tommy C. Daniels, Sr.; one sister, Birder L. Young; five brothers-in-law, James Greene, Eddie Horton, Alfred Thomas, Milton M. Young, Isaiah Hooks; two sisters-in-law, Eunice Daniels, and Jeanette Daniels; two nephews: Earnest Lee Darkins, Jordon Proctor; two nieces: Verdis Marie Young, and Thelma Ancrum.
