David Lee Hawkins, 69, passed away on January 12th in Montgomery, Alabama.
Son of Essie Cummings (Hawkins), and Walter D. Preston, he was born February 10, 1954, in Eufaula, AL. He attended TV McCoo High School and entered the U.S. Army shortly after. David Lee worked in many areas, one of which included Columbus Mills before transitioning to Miami, FL where he drove trucks and had his own lawn service. When he retired and moved back to Eufaula, he hustled here and there to earn extra money. He was never satisfied with sitting still and if he wasn’t home, you could always find him in Douglas Quarters at Look-Out house.
David Lee was a deeply beloved father, uncle, cousin, brother, friend and probably one of the realest persons you would ever meet. His passing was sudden and unexpected but he knew he wouldn’t probably make it to see 70.
While we lost our DADDY, many have lost a friend and loved one in him. David Lee has been a rock to many, hilarious to some, a master at trash talking, pain in the butt, and everybody definitely knew not to mess with him. To what I'm sure is a small select few (no matter what happened between you in your lives, he never judged you because he knew he wasn’t perfect. There was so much more to him if you knew him and if you were in his circle then you already know. But the reality is, he will truly be missed more than any words can say.
David Lee was preceded to heaven by his wife, mother, daughter, dad, step-dad, sisters, brothers, grandmothers, and grandfathers. He is survived by his Ex-wife, Polly Guilford Hawkins and mother of his children; Kalesha Hawkins of Atlanta, GA, Nadia Hawkins-Granville (Jeffery Granville) of Montgomery, AL and Steven Hawkins (Veronica Vaielua Hawkins) of Seattle, WA. Other children include Shimika Jackson of Dothan, AL and Jeleel Hawkins of Miami, FL. Sisters, Josephine White of Sumter, SC, Adell Cummings of New Orleans, LA and special sister-in-law, Marrietta Hawkins.
Brothers, John Hawkins Jr. and R.C. (Beaver) Hawkins both of Eufaula, AL and Hubbard Preston of Detroit, MI. Eight grandchildren, as well as many cousins, nieces with two of his beloved nieces being Taffeny Hawkins and Jackie Crews, along with nephew, Brandon Hawkins and many others.
