Jesse James Erkins was born in Eufaula, Alabama on April 22, 1944 to the late Fannie Erkins and was raised by Mose and Marie Erkins.
At an early age, Jesse accepted Christ as his Personal Savior and joined Rocky Mount Baptist Church. He received his education within the Eufaula and Barbour County School System, graduating from T. V. McCoo, Class of 1962.
After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving four years. Residing in Manhattan, New York, he worked as Manager of General Hardware Warehouse. After forty years of service, he retired and moved to Loganville, Georgia.
Jesse loved his family and loved family gatherings. He also was an avid sports fan. His favorite pastime was watching some type of sports on T.V. Maybe his favorite was those intense boxing matches.
God called and embraced Jesse into His loving arms on Friday, September 13, 2024 at his son’s residency in Montgomery, Alabama.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Fannie Erkins Sistrunk, Mose and Marie Erkins; four brothers, M.C. Erkins, Theo Erkins, Lorenzo Erkins, and Curtis Crews; one sister, Rebecca Brown.
Jesse’s loving memories will forever be cherished by his family: His children, one son, David Scott Erkins (Denise) of Montgomery, AL; Three daughters, Lisa Mechell Erkins and Deanna Evette Erkins, both of Eufaula, AL, Ada Claudette Hamlette (Maurice) of Loganville, GA; Three sisters, Grace King of Huntsville, AL, Catherine Erkins and Shirley (Randy) Dennis, all of Eufaula, AL; Grandchildren, Khiara, Tyree, David Jr (Britale), JaDavia, Wesley, Kenston, Brandon, Justin, Kaitlyn, and Jacquenya; Seven great grandchildren; One uncle, Arthur Conner of Florida and two aunts, Bernice Conner of Florida and Jimmia Conner of New York; A lifelong friend, ex-wife and mother of his children, Grace Williams Erkins Davis; A loving ex-daughter-in-law, Jacquita Barnett Erkins Pitts; A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
