Johnny Knight, Sr. Obituary

Johnny Abram Knight was born on September 12, 1942, in Abbeville, Alabama to Mary Liza Knight and Abram C. Knight. He departed this life on October 19, 2025.

At an early age, his family moved to Eufaula, Alabama. He joined St. John AME Church at an early age under the leadership of Rev. S. W. McKinney, where he faithfully served actively as Sunday School member, Male Chorus, Senior Choir, Tuesday Bible Study, Stewart, and Silver Edition.

John was educated in the Eufaula City School System. After graduating, he enrolled at Alabama A&M University for undergraduate studies, graduating with a major in mathematics. He also attended post graduate school at Alabama State University, graduating with a master’s degree in Administration and Supervision. He also earned an Educational Specialist degree in Curriculum and Supervision. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

Johnny or John as he was fondly called by his friends and associates, was a public servant with several leadership experiences and responsibilities. He served as Eufaula Council President and District Two City Councilman for twenty-four consecutive years, Council Pro Tempore for eight years, Past/Present liaison between Council and city departments such as Street Sanitation/Cemetery, Parks/Recreation/Airport and Police/Fire. He served on the Water Works & Sewer Board for twenty years. At an interval he also served as its Vice Chair.

There were many major accomplishments during John’s tenure in the City Council such as: New Community and Senior Centers were built; Community Development Grant for Dudley Quarters were received along with a Trail Grant-Phase III (current); Gammage Road water tank installed; Lake Drive widened and paved; Three fire stations and the Central Station were renovated; New fire trucks and police cars were purchased; Broad Street resurfacing and Downtown Streetscape Project were completed, to name a few. His motto and desire for service to his city was to be, “One dedicated and motivated in helping to move Eufaula forward.”

John leaves to mourn, a devoted wife of over fifty-five years, Elizabeth; two sons, Andre Terrell Knight (Dana), Johnny Knight, Jr. and a granddaughter, Josalyn; god children, Arenza Johnson, India Johnson, Marc Jeter, Benjamin Guilford, Kylan Rahming, DeVonte Campbell, and Cyrayah Lacey Fleming; two brothers-in-law, Robert Hoskey Davis and Eddie R. Johnson; a surrogate mom and a host of extended family members. He also leaves a multitude of friends and neighbors throughout this community and the nation. To God be the Glory for allowing him to pass through and be a part of each of our lives. His passing leaves a void in our hearts that cannot be replaced. May his soul rest in peace.
