Phillip Lushery Jones

Phillip Lushery Jones was born June 9, 1961 in Fort Gaines, Georgia to the late Ida Mae (Martin) Jones and Joe Jones.

Phillip was educated in the Henry County School System and graduated from Abbeville High School in 1980.  He joined Mary Magdalene Baptist Church at an early age and showed a great interest in music.  Under the guidance and leadership of Mrs. R. T. Jones and Mrs. Shannon Thomas, he learned to play the piano and organ.  Phillip attended Alabama State University and was a proud member of the Hornets Marching Band.  Phillip left Alabama State and joined the United States Navy, where he served one Tour of  Duty.  Phillip was the Chaplain’s Assistant where he played the   organ for religious services in his unit.  He also played for some of the local churches when time permitted. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, he remained in California for thirty plus years.  He continued working as the Minister of Music and taught piano lessons to many young children.

Phillip returned home in June, 2020, and worked in Fort Gaines, GA at Brown Chapel AME Church.  He was presently working at 1st Baptist Church in Dothan, AL. 

Phillip was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest brother, Joe Frank Jones.

He leaves to cherish his memories two brothers, Bobby (Peggy) Jones and Patrick (Dena) Jones of Abbeville, AL; seven aunts and two uncles, Louise Brandon of Huntsville, AL, Betty Smith, Emma Martin, Cora Vaughn and Herbert (Mamie) Vaughn, all of Abbeville, AL, Elizabeth (Arthur) Johnson of Fort Gaines, GA, and Mary Dozier of Augusta, GA; two nieces, Rhonda Jones of Abbeville, AL and Melanie Jones of Gardendale, AL; two nephews, Bobby Jones and Patrick Jones of Abbeville, AL; great niece, Logan Denson; special friends and cousins, Jerry Collins, Zenovia Doster, Marcus Long, Jerry Long, Isiah Long, Jr. and Reverend Eddie and Shannon Thomas; a host of other relatives and friends.
